The first issue of the agri benchmark Pig Report 2016, compiled by the international expert network of agri benchmark Pig provides facts and figures on global pig production.

Nowadays, consumers and politicians have a critical view on animal production in domestic and international markets. Against this background, independent and reliable information on production, consumption, economics and burning issues of livestock production are more important than ever.

How does pig production develop worldwide? Which countries are exporters, which are importers of pig meat? Which are most important trade flows and what are the products traded? The Pig Report provides answers to these questions but also goes beyond that by looking into the sectoral developments of 14 countries leading the global pig production and trade. Examples for these developments are the evolution of production, consumption and prices as well as spatial distribution of pig production and regional shifts in the last 10 years.

The unique selling proposition of the Pig Report is the analysis of typical farm data for the sow enterprises, fattening enterprises and closed systems (sows and fattening pigs in one farm). This data comprises production system and performance information such as piglet numbers and weights, mortalities, daily weight gains and fattening periods. The economic analysis covers total cost comparisons, price analysis and profitability indicators. It helps to understand the differences in profitability in different countries and the consequences of changes in framework conditions for the farms.

The Pig Report can help decision makers to estimate their position among international competitors or in case they are planning to invest in more sustainable systems. For the next years, an extension of the network to more countries and more farms is envisaged. We will further use the data to investigate the change of practices in production systems, for example for the analysis of animal welfare and environmental protection legislation.
