Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and using the methodologies developed in the IFCN (now agri benchmark), a project to develop a network of typical farms for beef finishing and cow-calf production and dairy (RENGRATI) was started in 2003. The objective of the third national beef panel was to present results obtained from the project and to link it with an international perspective.
The workshop counted with the participation of key decision makers of the Spanish beef sector, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the service company TRAGSEGA (executing the RENGRATI-project) the Spanish Association of Beef Producers (ASOPROVAC), the biggest cooperative in Andalucia COVAP, and other producers with an important role in the Spanish beef market (like Ternera Gallega, Vedella de Girona, and other quality programmes). All the inputs to the workshop were provided by the MAPA (from RENGRATI project, TRAGSEGA) and agri benchmark.
The programme comprised site visits to one of the biggest beef finishing unit of Spain, a new feedmill, a dairy factory and a slaughterhouse of COVAP as well as presentations and workshops.
