More and more organic products in Germany imported from abroad

Annual sales of organic products in Germany reached more than EUR 7 billion in 2012. Since 2000 the market has expanded more than threefold. In the same period, the organically cultivated area in Germany merely doubled, whereas expansions of several hundred per cent could be observed in a number of other European countries. While German consumers tend to buy more organic food, German farmers are only partly capable to meet the growing demand. Thus, imports of organic products seem to become increasingly important in Germany.

Import shares of commodities which are also cultivated in Germany amount up to 95 % for linseed, 93 % for soy beans and 91 % for paprika. But the size of these markets is relatively low when compared with wheat, which shows the largest import volume in absolute terms (70,000 tons). Altogether the import volume of cereals amounts to 114,000 tons, while the total imports of oilseeds and pulses account for 41,640 and 14,600 tons, respectively.

With the objective of providing analysis and information for better exploitation of the growing market in Germany, a new research project of the agri benchmark Organic team now focuses on the international competitiveness of German organic cereal, oilseed and pulse production in comparison with selected competing countries. The aim of this project is to develop strategies for practice and agricultural policy for an expansion of production in Germany.
